Education Project Coordinator (National Position)

Role Overview

The Education Project Coordinator is responsible for leading, managing, and strengthening NRC’s education programmes in Ethiopia North, with a focus on Amhara and Afar regions. The position provides technical leadership for education in emergencies, youth education and training, and vocational skills programmes while ensuring compliance with NRC standards, donor requirements, and protection mainstreaming principles.

The role includes team supervision, budget management, stakeholder coordination, and quality assurance across education activities in camp and host community settings.


Key Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

👉 Provide line management and supervision to education project field staff
👉 Ensure full compliance with NRC policies, procedures, and guidelines
👉 Contribute to education strategy development, needs assessments, and project proposals
👉 Manage delegated education projects, including activities, budgets, and documentation
👉 Ensure high technical quality and continuous improvement of project implementation
👉 Prepare and submit regular progress and performance reports
👉 Build staff capacity through coaching, mentoring, and skills transfer
👉 Coordinate with education authorities, partners, and humanitarian stakeholders
👉 Ensure projects prioritize vulnerable and protection-risk populations
👉 Apply NRC protection mainstreaming standards and report any concerns
👉 Refer protection cases through established referral pathways
👉 Promote the rights of internally displaced persons and returnees


Specific Responsibilities

👉 Lead education needs assessments and submit analytical reports to management and technical teams
👉 Expand, develop, and implement NRC education projects in collaboration with Area Programme Manager and Education Specialist
👉 Manage and monitor project budgets in compliance with donor and NRC financial guidelines
👉 Lead proposal development for education, Accelerated Education Programmes (AEP), and Youth Education and Training (YET)
👉 Support formal and non-formal education initiatives to improve enrolment, retention, and learning outcomes
👉 Ensure quality implementation of school capacity development, AEP, catch-up classes, YET, and vocational skills training
👉 Conduct regular field visits to education sites and training centres
👉 Document lessons learned and success stories in coordination with M&E teams
👉 Represent NRC in education cluster and coordination meetings
👉 Oversee recruitment and management of teachers for AEP and YET centres
👉 Ensure timely preparation of annual work plans and budgets
👉 Lead vocational skills training implementation, labour market assessments, and value chain analysis
👉 Strengthen collaboration with public and private sectors for job placement and apprenticeships
👉 Monitor vocational training activities and ensure regular data collection and reporting
👉 Provide mentorship and coaching support to youth and business groups


Educational Qualification

👉 Master’s degree or BA/BEd in Educational Planning and Management, Education Leadership, Pedagogy, Social Sciences, or related fields


Experience Requirements

👉 Minimum of 3 years relevant experience with a Master’s degree or 4 years with a BA/BEd
👉 Experience in education in emergencies, skills training, and capacity building
👉 Previous experience as an Education Project Coordinator in humanitarian or recovery contexts
👉 Experience working in complex, insecure, or volatile environments
👉 Demonstrated results related to education programme delivery


Required Skills and Competencies

👉 Strong knowledge of vocational skills training systems in Ethiopia
👉 Understanding of donor compliance and reporting requirements
👉 Proven leadership, team management, and mentoring skills
👉 Ability to manage resources efficiently and deliver results under pressure
👉 Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity
👉 Fluency in written and spoken English
👉 Knowledge of local languages is an advantage
👉 Ability to communicate clearly, build trust, and empower teams
👉 Strong planning, coordination, and performance management skills
